I have been teaching violin and viola in the Southport areafor more than twenty years. Several former pupils now work performing or teaching music, but hopefully all of them have found the experience of learning the violin and playing in the Southport String Ensemble both enjoyable and rewarding.

I run five orchestras for my pupils and local cellists.

Twinklers: A lively and engaging group for young beginners. Learn to play music together while developing basic listening skills and making friends. Regular concerts in which students perform their pieces to each other help build confidence and start to understand the merits of practising! The Twinklers includes children between the ages of four and eight.
Juniors & Intermediates: The first step to true ensemble playing. Pupils in the Junior orchestra develop the essential concentration, harmonic and rhythmic skills necessary to make music together. An exciting and friendly group, the Juniors and Intermediates have often accompanied the senior orchestra on their trips and tours abroad.
Seniors: Moving into the more advanced repertoire of string orchestral playing, the Senior orchestra is a dynamic group where everybody is given the chance to play in different parts of the orchestra and perform solos. Playing pieces such as Vivaldi's Seasons, Bach violin concertos, Grieg's Holberg Suite as well as traditional folk tunes and much more, the Senior orchestra gives players a real opportunity to play exciting music.
Adults: The Adult orchestra is relaxed and friendly, allowing players still learning or who had thought their playing days were long gone to play music together in a stress-free environment.

Tours and residentials: Frequent tours and concerts abroad add to the fun, with previous orchestras visiting Munich, Prague, Tuscanny, Corinthia, Amsterdam, Budapest, Isle of Wight, Black Forest and most recently Finland where we have formed a link with Vousarri Musiikkikoulu, Helsinki.

Regular trip to the Scots Fiddle Festival are a real treat with fabulous workshops and concerts.

Innovative projects add to the group's vibrancy, such as residential courses involving creating art and poetry, learning African drumming as well as composing music, choreographing dances and performing to a packed Southport Arts Centre - and that was just one project!
